How To Look Spiritual

1. Talk loud
When people talk loud it conveys authority, or so they think. When people talk loudly in a social setting so those around them “accidentally” are forced to listen to them, it makes the person feel important. If they are talking about God they probably feel like they are testifying publicly when all they’re really doing is annoying everyone else.
2. Use spiritual jargon
In using big Bible words, one is sure to give the impression that they are smart and spiritual. I’m not sure where we got the idea that someone being able to confuse us or talk over our heads means they are spiritual but many people think that way.
I have been in the presence of those who can and eagerly do randomly spit out Christian lingo that has little to do with the topic at hand and doesn’t really help anyone. When someone does this in a conversation with someone else it sends the message that “I’m more concerned about looking good than helping you”.
3. Quote the Bible
The Bible is good and always right so when I quote it that means I’m good and always right, right?
Wrong!
I was in a small group once where a young man was pouring out his heart about dealing with a difficult relationship in his life when another guy blurted out “The truth shall set you free!” Sure, that is a verse in Scripture but when I asked what he meant by it that could in any way help the situation, he had no idea.
People sometimes quote the Bible without any real point as if they must prove to you they know enough of it to validate what they say or believe. Just because you know Bible does not mean you know what is right, or that I need to believe anything you have to say. If you can’t tell me about yourself, you church, your small group, or whatever else without continuous and pointless Bible quoting, you’re trying too hard and I’m not really interested.
4. Talk about what God is doing
Often when I meet people who are in a new or minority movement I will hear them say that God is moving. Well of course He is! He is always moving. That doesn’t mean you are following Him.
I followed up with one young lady who said this to me and she could not tell me where or how God was moving, but she was convinced (or had been told that) He was.
The point of our lives is not to look spiritual. I don’t even think every spiritual person always even looks “spiritual”. And if we really are that God-focused, we are not at all concerned with how we appear to others.
