Personal Core Values – Intro

Posted By on January 15, 2011

As part of the church planting training we completed we were lead through the process of creating a vision statement, mission statement and core values list.  Because I have been thinking about, planning for, and praying through church planting for a couple years, these exercises came pretty easy for me.  I had thought about it a lot, even talked about it to other people, just never formally written down a vision, mission and list of values for the new church.

Like I said, that came easy for me.  Several months later though I was thinking about my life, my direction, and what I want to live for.  I thought it would be a good idea to write a vision statement, mission statement, and list of values I wanted to operate my life from.  I expected it to be easy just as it was with the church.  That was not the case.

I have done a lot of planning and preparation to make sure the message and mission of the church will be simple.  While other church planters in our class had five, six, or even eight core values listed for their church plants, I was content with four (and actually wish I could make it less).  I will fight to make sure the church is simple.  I, however, am much more complicated.  I had trouble not writing out 37 things I wanted to be known for or have as personal core values.

When you try to pull yourself in too many directions and commit to too many things you end up accomplishing nothing.  My new year’s resolutions from ages 15 to 23 prove this!

I wrote.  I prayed.  I crossed out.  I re-worded.  And I ended up with six personal core values that I want to be known for.  These are personal standards or codes I want to govern the way I live, work and play.  For what its worth I want to share them with you over the next six posts.

Perhaps this will challenge you to be intentional about setting up written guidelines in your life or perhaps it will help you understand why I will or will not do certain things in the future as I hope to stand pact on these principles I want to become part of my character and conduct.
